Enjoying the little things

Since finishing up at work I have come to really enjoy the simple things in life.

I feel like a new mum all over again as I get to experience everything with a totally fresh perspective.

It’s quite liberating and I smile and think positively so much more now than I used to.

It really is the little things, like the opportunity to drop off and pick up my daughters at school and kinder.

To hear about all the great, and sometimes not so great, things that happened in their days as soon as they walk out of the classroom door.

To get to spend some quality time with them in the afternoon, instead of bustling in the door from work at 6pm and barking orders at them to finish their homework, tidy up their rooms or stop fighting as I made a start on dinner or reached for the telephone to order take away.

The chance to connect and build relationships with some of the other parents at my daughter’s school, instead of brushing past them with a quick ‘hello’ because I need to rush off to work or an appointment.

To be able to spread out my household chores over a week instead of cramming everything into one day on the weekend.

To have more flexibility in my children’s after school or weekend activities instead of telling them they can’t go or rushing around crazily in the evenings or on the weekend from one thing to the next.

To start baking in the kitchen again as I try out all types of delicious creations I discover online, instead of buying cakes, biscuits and slices that are full of preservatives, and not to mention expensive!

To be able to get the kids to bed at a reasonable hour so I can spend more time with my husband, instead of chasing the kids around the house and begging them to have a shower, put their pyjamas on and get into bed … well, ok that still happens but it’s a lot less hectic now!

The list could go on, but I hope you can see I have really come to appreciate the new awareness my decision to spend more time with my family has made to my life.

I encourage you all to enjoy it too!

  1. So happy this is working for you all….it takes time.
But yes smell those roses, feel the wind on your face, sing along in the car or home, dance while house working when no ones watching, of course, because not one of us know what the next second will bring…..live for now!

  2. Change evolves, don’t be hard on yourself, just be aware, and open to change, and it will slowly embrace and become natural to you. Sadly most people like quick fixes to problems, often that has domino effect causing more drama. Slowly this will become the norm as you are open to change. Good on you.

  3. Such a timely reminder at this busy time of year. All too often we get caught up in the hustle and bustle of it all when all we really need to do is stop for a moment or two. xx

  4. I love being able to stay home with my daughter. Shes 16 months now and I’m in my second year of maternity leave and I honestly don’t know how I’m going to go back to work after being able to be with her everyday. I’m hoping that I won’t have to.

    • I love the decision I have made to spend more time with my family. Obviously my daughters are older now (5 and 9) and I did return to work for many years and enjoyed it at the time, but as they get older I feel they need me to be around more. Whatever decision you make for your family will be the right one, the main thing is to enjoy the time you share together.

  5. I think it is the change of perspective that is giving you joy, as you’ve essentially just described my life, yet as it is all I’ve ever done, it isn’t giving me the same satisfaction that you are getting. Time for a change of perspective. And bring on the end of term!

  6. What a lovely post. As a full time working mum I can appreciate this. I love my job and I also love spending time with my kids but sometimes the balance is out of whack! Thanks for sharing and linking up with Mummy Mondays. #TeamMM
