Hello yoga, my good friend

Hello yoga - Ever-changing Life of a MumOn Sunday afternoon, I rolled out my yoga mat for the first time since having Baby, and oh boy did it feel good.

My body has been aching for some time on the mat for a few weeks now and my mind has often travelled to the thought of settling into a beautiful Shavasana.

So with my older girls having a sleepover at their grandparents’ house and my youngest happily snuggling in her daddy’s arms for an afternoon nap, I pulled on my favourite leggings, rolled out my yoga mat, lit a scented candle and started up my new post-natal yoga DVD for some much needed me time.

While I used a few yoga poses to soothe aching parts of my body during pregnancy, I have not completed a full class since I was about 20 weeks pregnant.

I could almost feel my body give a sigh of relief as I stretched, and my mind felt so relaxed as I breathed through each pose. There was nothing better than taking those calming breaths in Child’s Pose or feeling strong and steady in Warrior I.

I now realise that yoga has become a part of who I am. It calms and soothes my spirit.

When I find time for yoga, even just once a week, I feel more centred for the days ahead and often return to the calming, breathing techniques in moments when family life gets a little crazy.

Since Sunday, I have also pulled back out my favourite 10-minute guided meditations for mums, something else I have not given myself time for since having Baby but realise is more important now than ever before.

It’s really, really good to be back.

Let’s not leave it so long next time, my beautiful friend.

What do you do to soothe and refresh your mind and spirit? Have you tried yoga or meditation?

  1. I’ve tried yoga and hated it (I am sooooo inflexible) but I really loved pilates, and found that same kind of Zen. I kind of fell out of it when I left Sydney and the best pilates teacher ever, but hope to go back to it again one day when the kids are a bit older.

    • When I first tried yoga many years ago I wasn’t a fan either – I actually wrote a blog post about this last year – but then I found the right teacher at the right stage of my life and it just worked. Unfortunately, I don’t get to the mat as much as I would like, but I’m hoping to make more time when I can.

  2. Oh I love yoga too! I’m 35 weeks pregnant and in hospital with placenta previa and am really missing all the wonderful antenatal yoga I did with my first pregnancy. I can’t wait to be able to move and stretch without a big belly getting in the way! Childs pose is oh so soothing when life feels hectic 🙂

  3. getting out for a run is my sure fire way to run and unwind. Sadly lately it hasn’t been happening as nearly as much as it should. I have never really tried yoga but I love the idea.

  4. I’ve been doing weekly yoga classes for about the past two years…and it is such a great feeling after an hour and a half on the mat. (Came here via #FYBF)

  5. Great work! I used to do yoga and would like to re-start. (And when I say that I realise there’s nothing stopping me but my own apathy!!!)

I like the idea of getting back into meditation as well!
