Take a deep breath in, take a deep breath out. The new year is here and there are 366 fabulous days ahead of us (yep, it’s a leap year folks) to make, create and be who you want to be.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’m not one for setting new year’s resolutions as all too often they tend to be broken bringing up unwanted feelings of guilt and unhappiness, and seriously who wants or needs that?!
Instead I prefer to set intentions for my year ahead. Intentions that can bubble along and allow for flexibility and movement as the days, weeks, months roll by and with a young family that’s the way it has to be!
This year, I have though decided to set myself a word, something that I can hopefully come back to again and again to re-set myself as I need to.
I’ve tried a few on and the one I keep coming back to is: ‘Breathe’.
I’m not overly sentimental when it comes to things in my home. And I’m definitely not a hoarder. Just ask my husband. He’ll tell you that I can be pretty ruthless when it comes to decluttering and throwing away unwanted items from around our home. In fact, he hates having me around sifting through his belongings during a clean out as he has a lot of trouble letting things go whereas I believe if I haven’t used it in the past year and it isn’t truly special to me or doesn’t bring me any real happiness then it’s time to let it go.
I’m a big believer that it’s not ‘things’ that create happiness in your life; it’s the stories behind them and the memories they evoke that make them important to keep.
Today, I thought I would share with you 10 of my favourite things that bring me great happiness, not just because I like it but because they hold fond memories or stir up strong feelings within me. They make me feel grateful and blessed for what I have. That’s what makes them truly special.
The clock radio goes off and you fumble to hit the snooze button. It’s so cold, raining and dark outside that all you want to do is snuggle back down under the doona and sleep a little longer.
But what if it didn’t need to feel like this? What if you woke in the morning energised to start your day and grab hold of all that may unfold, no matter how mundane the series of tasks that were ahead.
Now while every day isn’t going to be the best day of your life, it’s still important to see the bigger picture and realise that every little thing you do adds to your overall contentment. It also makes it a little easier to breathe through those more than challenging moments when things just aren’t going your way.
I thought I would take a moment to share my morning routine with you. It has changed quite drastically over the past year since I chose to slow down and lead a simpler lifestyle.
